For three weeks, my Wi-Fi speeds dropped 40% every evening between 7-11 PM. Speed tests showed 340 Mbps instead of my usual 580 Mbps. Streaming buffered. Video calls froze. I blamed my ISP, then my router — but the culprit turned out to be my smart home hub. After two weeks of testing, here is exactly what was happening and how I fixed it.

The Symptoms

The slowdown had a pattern that eventually gave it away:

  • Speeds dropped 30-50% only in the evening, never in the morning
  • Wired connections to the router were unaffected — only Wi-Fi suffered
  • The 2.4GHz band was hit hardest; 5GHz lost only 10-15%

The Culprit: 2.4GHz Channel Interference

Most smart home hubs (Zigbee-based ones especially) and dozens of smart devices communicate on the 2.4GHz band — the same band your Wi-Fi uses. Zigbee channel 15, 20, and 25 overlap with Wi-Fi channels 1, 6, and 11.

My hub was defaulting to Zigbee channel 15, which sits directly on top of Wi-Fi channel 1. Every time my 23 Zigbee devices checked in — bulbs polling, sensors reporting, plugs negotiating — they talked over my Wi-Fi traffic. Evening was worst because that is when schedules and motion sensors fire most.

The Diagnosis Process

Step 1: Confirm it is interference, not bandwidth

Run speed tests on 2.4GHz and 5GHz separately. If 2.4GHz is disproportionately slower, interference is likely. A Wi-Fi analyzer app (free on phones) shows channel congestion in real time.

Step 2: Find your hub's Zigbee channel

This lives in the hub's app under settings — Aqara, SmartThings, Hubitat, and Philips Hue all expose it. Note the channel number.

Step 3: Check the overlap

Zigbee channels 15, 20, and 25 are the common defaults, and they overlap Wi-Fi channels 1, 6, and 11 respectively. If your router and hub share overlap, that is your problem.

The Fix: Separate the Channels

The fix is moving one of them. I moved my router to Wi-Fi channel 11 and left Zigbee on 15 — maximum separation.

Steps:

1. Set your router to a Wi-Fi channel far from your hub's Zigbee channel (router settings page)

2. If needed, change the hub's Zigbee channel in its app — note this re-pairs some devices

3. Rebuild your Zigbee mesh: battery devices re-join automatically; powered devices act as routers and re-form the mesh over a few hours

4. Re-run speed tests morning and evening for 3 days to confirm

My results: evening speeds recovered to 560 Mbps (from 340), and Zigbee device response times actually improved because the mesh re-formed cleanly.

Other Hub-Related Slowdowns to Check

Hub saturating your uplink

Cloud-dependent hubs (cameras especially) can upload continuously. Check your router's client list for upload hogs — one 24/7 streaming camera can eat 2-5 Mbps upstream constantly.

Old hub firmware

Firmware bugs have caused broadcast storms — a hub flooding the network with packets. Update hub firmware before deeper debugging.

Too many devices on one Zigbee router node

Zigbee meshes route through powered devices. A node with 30+ children slows response for all of them. Spread devices across the mesh or add a smart plug as a new router node mid-house.

Eero/Orbi and IoT band steering

Some mesh systems steer IoT devices to 2.4GHz then backhaul on the same band you are measuring. Dedicated backhaul (tri-band systems) avoids this entirely.
