Research & Testing Methodology

Research phase: 2 weeks minimum

Before any product touches our test bench, we spend at least 2 weeks on research:

• Reader pain points: We mine Reddit (r/BuyItForLife, r/hometheater, r/MiniPCs, r/smart_home, etc.) for real user complaints, recurring issues, and "wish someone told me this" threads. This grounds our picks in actual user experience, not marketing copy.
• Expert reviewers: We cross-reference with RTINGS (TVs/audio), Wirecutter, Tom's Hardware, Notebookcheck, AnandTech, and category-specific publications. If our testing contradicts a trusted reviewer, we re-test and document why.
• Manufacturer specs: We pull official spec sheets, FCC filings, and teardown reports (iFixit, JerryRigEverything) to verify engineering claims.
• Failure modes: We deliberately look for known failures (Amazon 1-star reviews filtered for "verified purchase", Better Business Bureau complaints, recall databases).

Output: A shortlist of 8-12 candidates that pass the "would I personally buy this" filter.

Hands-on testing: 2-6 weeks per product

Each finalist product goes through hands-on testing. We document what we test, how we test it, and why the test matters:

Build quality & design

We examine materials, fit-and-finish, hinge integrity (for foldables), keyboard travel (for laptops), zipper durability (for backpacks), and any tactile quality signals. We photograph defects and document serial number variations across units.

Performance benchmarks

For performance-sensitive categories (laptops, mini-PCs, vacuums, TVs), we run standardized benchmarks:

• Laptops/Mini-PCs: Cinebench R23, Geekbench 6, 3DMark Time Spy, sustained-load thermal throttling test (30-min loop)
• TVs: RTINGS HDR peak brightness, pre-calibration color accuracy (ΔE), input lag at 60Hz/120Hz
• Vacuums: Pickup test on standardized debris mix (rice, oats, sand, pet hair)
• Headphones: Frequency response via miniDSP EARS + real-world ANC comparison on plane/train/office noise recordings

Real-world usage scenarios

Benchmarks don't tell the whole story. We use every product for its intended purpose:

• Vacuums: 5+ full-home cleanings, mapping accuracy over multiple floors, edge-cleaning performance
• Espresso machines: 50+ shots across light/dark roasts, steam wand performance, daily workflow frictions
• Smart locks: 30-day battery test (4 daily events), weather resistance, keypad responsiveness with wet/gloved fingers
• Standing desks: 30-day daily-use test for motor noise, wobble at standing height, height memory accuracy

Long-term durability

Where possible, we keep test units for 6-12 months and update recommendations if we see failure patterns. Our Corrections page documents every long-term finding.

Score synthesis: 4 weighted dimensions

Each product receives a score on 4 dimensions. The total score is a weighted average:

Example scoring: A robot vacuum might score Performance 9.0 / Value 7.5 / Build 8.5 / Support 8.0 = 8.3 total. We round to 1 decimal place and display it on every product card.

Price verification: weekly

Affiliate prices change constantly. Our commitment: every "current price" you see is verified within the last 7 days.

How we verify

• Amazon: We hit the Amazon Product Advertising API daily for our top 100 picks. If the price changed >10% from the last verified price, we update the article.
• Shopee TH / Lazada TH: We check the public price twice a week (these marketplaces don't have a PA-API equivalent).
• Direct brand sites: We re-scrape the brand's official page weekly. Many brands run 30-day flash sales that we surface in our deals roundup.

What we don't do

• Stale prices: We never leave a price unverified for more than 7 days on a Top Pick. If a product is discontinued or out of stock, we move it to "also-considered" status immediately.
• Inflated "was" prices: We don't use MSRP as the "was" price if no retailer actually sold at MSRP. We use the lowest price in the prior 90 days.
• Coupon stacking: If a deal requires 3 coupons + prime + a credit card offer, we note it. If it's not stackable to a normal shopper, we use the simpler price.

How affiliate links work (and don't affect our picks)

Tech Deals Finder earns a small commission (typically 1-4% of purchase price) when you click an affiliate link and buy a product. This commission never influences which products we recommend or how we rank them.

Why affiliate commissions exist

Testing equipment costs money (we own $15,000+ of test gear), and our editors spend 40-80 hours per article. Affiliate commissions from readers' purchases are how we keep the lights on. The alternative is sponsored content — and we refuse to do that.

What "no influence" means in practice

• We pick products before we check if they're in our affiliate network
• We rank picks by our 4-dimension score, not by commission rate
• We recommend non-affiliate products when they're genuinely better (rare, but it happens)
• We never accept "preferred partner" placement from retailers
• If a product is only available from one retailer (e.g. brand-direct), we link there even if the commission is lower

Editorial review: human + automated gates

Before any article ships, it goes through two review gates:

Automated HIL gate

Every article runs through 11 automated checks before publication:

1. All product cards have real ASINs (not placeholders)
2. Affiliate URLs match the platform they're on (Amazon → amazon.com, Shopee → shopee.co.th)
3. Prices match our weekly verification snapshot
4. Hero image matches the article category
5. H2 sections follow template vocabulary (no raw markdown leaks)
6. Source citations are linked (not just mentioned)
7. FAQ section has at least 5 questions
8. No "AI bragging" language ("Deep Research generated..." in the visible body)
9. Score values are within 4.0-9.9 range (no fake 10/10s)
10. Build script saved as build_<slug>.py matching MD filename
11. Article has been human-edited (raw Gemini output flagged)

Human editor sign-off

A human editor (Mongkolpoj J., 15+ years reviewing consumer electronics) reads every article before publication. We check:

• Does the intro answer "who is this for?" in the first 2 sentences?
• Are there any factual claims that need a source we missed?
• Does the buying guide match the picks?
• Are the cons actually cons (not dealbreakers dressed up)?
• Would I recommend this to my mom?

How we update articles (and admit mistakes)

No article is ever "done." We commit to:

• Price refresh: Every article's prices are re-verified weekly
• Reader corrections: Every reader-submitted correction is investigated within 2 business days. Verified corrections appear on our /corrections page
• Annual re-test: Top picks are re-tested annually; if a product degrades in quality or a better alternative emerges, we re-rank
• Discontinuation handling: When a Top Pick is discontinued, we replace it within 48 hours and document the change in /corrections
